VAGINOSIS

Vaginosis is the inflammation of the vagina and a very common problem of all ages. What usually happens is that the PH of the vagina increases and becomes more alkaline in order to help the growth of some microorganisms instead of others. As we all know the vagina has in its normal state slightly acidic PH,  in order  to maintain a specific balance of microorganisms which constitute the normal vaginal flora. In cases where the PH changes, we see an increase of certain microorganisms over others.

A key microbe that is affecting vaginitis is GARDERELLA VAGINALIS and trichomonades. There is also the case of vaginitis by mycoplasma, oureoplasma, and viral infections by the virus HPV, which can cause warts.

A very common vaginitis occurs due to fungal growth. In Menopause, due to menopausal estrogen deficiency, atrophic vaginitis and small or large lesions can be created in the vagina  and can cause the inflammation. If the vaginal fluids from transparent turn to brown, green, yellowish or white, and there is a burning sensation, smell or even aimmoria in these cases the probability of vaginitis is almost certain. The presence of itching and white secretions commonly associated with the presence of fungi especially after taking antibiotics for a long time, and the smell and secretions are yellow or greenish color may be due to infection by anaerobic bacteria.

DIAGNOSIS

In order to make a diagnosis the doctor needs to take and examine vaginal fluid in order to investigate the cause of bacteria that caused the problem.

Treatment should be based on the antibiogram that a microbiologist will give us after isolating the bacterial that caused the problem. Treatment is drug based and has to do with taking specific antibiotics, which may be oral or vaginal suppositories. There are many antibiotics used in these cases as erythromykini, metronidazole, etc. Also cleansing of the genitals with antiseptic solutions and acids and simultaneous treatment of a partner often helps treat and reduce the chances of the problem recurring.
